Luke Goes to Bat by Rachel Isadora

Isadora, R. (2005). Luke goes to bat. New York, New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons.

Summary:

Luke is a young, African American boy who goes up to his roof where he can see the lights of Ebbets Field whenever the Dodger play in Brooklyn.  He imagines each play of the game.  He longs to hit a home-run just like his hero, Jackie Robinson.  The kids on Bedford Avenue refuse to let him play.  Finally, he's allowed to play.  He plays poorly, so poorly he thinks they will never let him play again.  His grandmother takes him to see his hero in a real game, and Luke learns part of being a hero is never giving up.
